Pipeline & Pump Station Enclosures

Engineered Fabric Pipeline & Pump Station Enclosures

When project managers, procurement specialists, operations managers, engineering firms, or EPCM (Engineering, Procurement, Construction Management) contractors need engineered buildings and camp systems for remote upstream, midstream and downstream pipeline enclosures, they call Alaska Structures®. Our company was founded by providing the first ruggedized tension membrane structures capable of withstanding subfreezing temperatures and blizzard-force winds on the North Slope of Alaska. At the time, there was a great deal of skepticism for using tension fabric structures in such an extreme environment. To date, Alaska Structures has supplied more than 55,000 engineered building solutions to more than 65 countries. Our more than 40 years of proven experience in hot, cold, tropical, and high altitude environments has resulted in the development of the ultimate engineered building solution capable of meeting any challenge, functional or environmental.

With over 2.5 million miles of energy pipeline, the United States and Canada rely heavily on the economic benefits of pipelines transporting large volumes of crude, refined petroleum, fuels, gases, water, and wastewater over great expanses of land.

Compared to other shipping methods - be it railroad or truck, pipelines offer a lower cost per unit and higher capacity. Alaska Structures has been instrumental in the successful construction, operation, and expansion of these pipeline facilities by providing engineered fabric buildings for the following pipeline applications:

  • Portable Construction Camps
  • Camp Buildings (including: Dormitories, On-Site Cafeterias, Administration Offices, and Recreational Facilities)
  • Compressor Stations
  • Metering Stations
  • Storing Leak Detection and Integrity Monitoring Equipment
  • Main Line Valve Stations
  • Pigging Facilities, Slug Catchers, and Flare Pits
  • Pressure Control and Pressure Reduction Stations (Pressure Regulating Facilities)
  • Product Terminals
  • Pump Stations
  • Communications and Control Facilities
  • On-Site Warehousing and Remote Warehousing
  • Ship, Rail, and Truck Terminals
  • Production and Gathering Facilities
  • Maintenance Facilities
  • Welding Enclosures
  • Environmental Testing Shelters

Engineered Pipeline Facilities That Reduce Environmental Impact

When the Alyeska Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline was being constructed, a major emphasis of the project was to reduce the overall environmental impact and protect the beautiful Alaskan wilderness. At the time, the construction of the Alyeska Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline was the largest privately financed construction project - a cost of $4.5 billion. Alaska Structures was contacted to provide portable and permanent infrastructure needed to complete the 800-mile pipeline construction including:

  • 12 Pump Stations
  • 3 Refrigeration Plants
  • A 1,000-Acre Marine Terminal
  • 10 Arctic Construction Camps – each its own “mini city” with dormitories, food service, power generation, sewage disposal, heating and water supply systems.
  • 62 Remotely Operated Gate Valves

The logistics for engineering, procurement, and construction required more than 7,000 workers and supervisors operating year round in the arctic environment and over a variety of remote and inhospitable terrains. As more stringent rules and regulations are put in place to protect, mitigate, and promote environmental responsibility, oil and gas companies need to take a pro-active approach and leverage the proven expertise of Alaska Structures to provide engineered fabric buildings and camp systems that offer the following benefits:

  • Shorter construction times
  • Minimal foundation requirements
  • Easily relocated or left-in place as a permanent installation
  • Very little maintenance
  • Low weight and cube
