The 800-mile-long Alyeska Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline — the largest privately financed construction project — was a massive undertaking. In fact, it involved the construction of 12 pump stations, three refrigeration plants, 10 arctic construction camps, 62 gate valve enclosures and a 1,000-acre marine terminal. The engineering, procurement and construction logistics required more than 7,000 workers operating year-round in the arctic climate.
